Wind Forecast

Historical records show wind events stronger than those on January 7, indicating that similar extreme wind conditions are not only possible, they’re inevitable.
The winds on January 7, 2025, were repeatedly described by officials and media as “unprecedented.” This is factually incorrect. Historical meteorological data from the National Weather Service shows that since 1947, there have been 453 documented weather events with winds equal to or greater than those recorded that day. Most notably, the winds on January 7, 2024, just one year prior, were significantly stronger.
Labeling the Palisades Fire as an unforeseeable anomaly ignores credible and timely warnings issued in the days leading up to the event. The National Weather Service issued a fire weather watch on January 3, 2025, with detailed forecasts warning of dry conditions and high wind gusts. Ignoring these forecasts constitutes negligence, not an unforeseeable act of nature.
